Does AccountEdge International Need to Contact a Licensing Server to Operate?

Hi,
We used the UK version of MYOB for over 10 years in our Asia based SME but over the past few years the software has been forced to contact a licensing server to start up and run. That was fine until MYOB's UK business was sold off and the activation servers were turned off, and the only option given is to pay a yearly 'maintenance fee'. So we have reverted back to a really old copy of MYOB while we try to find an alternative.
I am really keen to order AccountEdge for our company because we desperately need some of the newer features and there would be almost no learning curve for our staff from MYOB. I just want to make sure we will not have any nasty surprises if we invest a lot of time into this product.

Hi Conan, would you be able to tell me which country you're in so I can give you the right advice?
Probably not that helpful given that you say you have already gone back to an old version but the shut-down of the file confirmation process for UK users that was planned for 31 December 2011 has been postponed - I don't know how long for at this stage.

We are based in Taiwan and we are using the PC version, I am happy for us to switch to Mac.

The International version only needs to contact (Acclivity's) server when you first register it or if you switch the program to another Mac- it's the Mac that's licensed these days rather than the data file. It's totally different to the old MYOB random confirmations. Also, you can buy version of the UK products from me that have the licensing set-up described above and are free of any mandatory service agreement renewal- let me know if you’re interested- ***@boscown.com <x-msg://36/***@boscown.com>
Please note AccountEdge International won't open a UK file; you'll have to go through a conversion process although you will be able to import your list of accounts and Card information. Having said that there's a certified consultant in the US who may be import all your data- let me know if that's an option you would be interested in.

I'm not sure if the UK version would be any more useful for us because we planned to start a new file from scratch and just import the data we need. Apart from VAT we don't need any UK-centric features.
What I would be really interested in is some way to localize at least some of the main functions into Chinese. There is NO good SME accounting software with Chinese language support so our non English speaking staff just have to struggle and we would be willing to pay for a custom build if necessary.
